Boat sinking planned for 2026

Trust Purpose

The Twofold Bay Charitable Trust is a registered charity which has been gifted the Twofold Bay fishing trawler to deliver a unique and ecologically benefical project - the creation of an artificial reef and dive wreck by sinking the vessel three nautical miles from Napier Inner Harbour, in 17 metres of water.

This initative is designed to enhance the biodiversity of the muddy seafloor and provide a lasting legacy for Marine conservation, recreation and tourism. We are proud to be working alongside LegaSea Hawkes Bay and in partnership with tangata kaitiaki, Mana Ahuriri and Ngāti Parau Trust. Their support and guidance are integral to ensuring the project aligns with tikanga Māori and respects the signifgance of the marine environment.

Project Cost

This project is estimated to cost $200,000 and the Trust needs financial support to help make it a reality. We are grateful for the many generous pledges of financial support and to the many volunteers who are helping us ready the vessel for its final journey, which we hope will take place in the summer of 2026.

In particular, we need funds for stripping the vessel in accordance with the London Protocol, which governs environmental standards for marine disposal and reef creation. Also to cover the costs of towage, anchoring, purchase and placement of up to fifty reef cones on the seafllor to enhance the marine environment and assist in protecting the vessel from storm events and for ongoing monitoring.
